internet connectivity guide for consumers and homeworkers
This is my attempt at helping you make a decision.
I'm Chris, the CEO of Integra Networks.
If you're reading this, I can assert with 99% certainty that you're struggling with inadequate internet service at a property where you currently reside, are considering purchasing, or, even more frustratingly, have recently bought and discovered too late that the internet speed is excruciatingly slow.
One thing I've come to understand firsthand is that you're not alone in this struggle. As a rural connectivity provider, one of our biggest challenges is managing the significant number of enquiries we receive each week.
We make every effort to call each individual who fills out our availability checker, but with such a high volume of enquiries coming through, it's nearly impossible to reach everyone.
Given this reality, I've put together this page to help you assess your situation and determine what’s the right solution for your needs. Hopefully I have done a good job.
There are a wide variety of products out there, more than I have mentioned on this page, but what I have done is cut through the clutter and given you the key solutions, based on typical consumer requirements and what a homeworker needs to operate efficiently.
The goal of this page is to highlight some of the options available to you, provide potential quick solutions that would suit most, guide you in determining what might be the best connectivity solution, and, should we appear to be the right match for you by the end of it, provide advice on the next steps for exploring our solution further.
As a business, we're not interested in forcing a square peg into a round hole. Our solution isn't for everyone, and if you talk to us, you'll find that we always offer good, honest advice on the best options.
If after reading this, you believe we might be the right fit for you, or even if you're still deliberating, please follow the steps at the end of the page to proceed further.
If not, I hope I've helped direct you towards an alternative service that's right for you.
All the best

Conducting Your Own Research
Step 1. Verifying Your Fibre Availability
Before you explore alternative routes, I recommend double-checking if traditional options are available. Sometimes, when you contact mainstream ISPs such as Sky, they may inform you that no services are available. However, don't take their word as final - they can often be incorrect.
There are various online tools available for checking connectivity options yourself, like the Openreach Fibre Broadband checker and the Ofcom Broadband Checker. These platforms are an excellent starting point.
For a more detailed guide, we have a blog post on our website that provides further insights. Links to these two checkers are provided below for your convenience.

Step 2. Exploring Cost-Effective Options Suitable for Most
Your next step should be a preliminary check for mobile connectivity. Though this isn't completely accurate, it does allow you to gauge whether a more cost-effective solution like a mobile WiFi hub from one of the mobile network operators is an option - EE, Three, Vodafone or o2.
This solution could be a viable option if your internet use is primarily domestic, encompassing general browsing and day-to-day online activities. In some instances, you might find that a single network can provide satisfactory speeds.

Single Network 4 Solutions
Exploring the reliability of single network 4G as a broadband alternative.
Delving Deeper into Connectivity Options
Beyond the Basics: Exploring Diverse Connectivity Options
To provide a comprehensive view, it's important to note that there are indeed other options available. However, the focus here is on the options that are most relevant to general consumers and home workers. It's safe to say that investing tens of thousands of pounds in a dedicated fibre connection isn't a feasible or desirable option for most individuals.
So, let's take a look at your options. I've taken the time to outline the pros and cons of each, aiming to equip you with the necessary information to make an informed decision about which path to potentially explore.
Single Network 4g
Cheap, quick to deploy but will require a little bit of work to get the best service, which may or not be good enough.

4g/5G internet
Option 1 - Single 4G/5G Network Solutions
I have already touched on this earlier, but I think it's worth discussing a little more as it will be a good fit for most of you.
There's a significant difference between simply ordering a SIM modem and placing it in your living room, and having an external antenna professionally installed on your property.
When you use a router with a SIM, the first task for the unit is to connect from inside your property to the local cell tower. Consequently, this isn't the most efficient way to achieve the fastest service from the local mobile network operator.
However, if you have an external antenna installed and correctly directed towards the right cell operator, you'll experience less interference on your connection. This results in a faster, more stable service.
So, when would I recommend a single network solution to our enquirers?
Without a doubt, this service is best for consumers who don't use much data (as you can get a cheap SIM), and for users who primarily browse the internet.
It's also a good option for holiday homes or static caravans. It's relatively inexpensive each month, can offer decent performance in some cases, and has a low upfront cost.
You might pay a few hundred pounds for installation and hardware, and from £20 per month, depending on your service provider. If 5G is available, that's even better.
"If you are a low internet user, without any critical service to rely on, this is the cheapest option"
Where does it fall short, though?
Single 4G network solutions often come with inexpensive routers that can't fully utilise the capabilities of the local cell towers, and they rely on a single network connection.
If you're in a remote area, speeds may not be impressive and the strength of a single network may result in intermittent dropouts. Unfortunately, when it drops out and you contact the service provider, there's often little they can do due to the inexpensive hardware used and the limited bandwidth available on a single network.
Moreover, these solutions also struggle with technical requirements like remote access for CCTV, VPN, and firewall issues. You're pretty much left to fend for yourself when it comes to configuration.
If you have important meetings, the connection might be fine most of the time, but if it's not reliable, you may find yourself heading to the local coffee shop to secure a decent internet connection.
SATELITE INTERNET
Option 2 - Starlink Internet
Perhaps surprisingly, I must confess that I find Starlink to be an exceptional product. Starlink has the potential to bring internet access to people worldwide who have previously been unable to connect.
So, when would I recommend Starlink to our enquirers?
If you're located in a truly remote area, more than 10km away from any cell towers, Starlink is practically a no-brainer. Similarly, if you live in particularly hilly terrain and find yourself on the wrong side of the hills relative to local cell towers, Starlink could be an excellent solution for you.
Currently, Starlink seems to be the superior satellite option available. Its unique offering of unlimited data sets it apart from many satellite providers. However, proceed with caution; their terms and conditions have been subject to recent changes in different regions. So, if you decide to go with them, make sure you thoroughly read the fine print. With typical download speeds exceeding 200Mbps, Starlink presents an attractive option for those wanting to stream content or use the internet for general purposes at home, provided the pricing aligns with your budget.
"If you are truly rural then Starlink is probably your best bet"
So, when would I recommend Starlink to our enquirers?
Feedback from enquiries who have used Starlink is varied. Much of it depends on how crucial the internet is for you. As a casual consumer, if Netflix goes down for a few hours, it might be mildly irritating, but it's far from a disaster. However, if you're working from home or running a business, not being able to access your accounting software, upload vital CAD files, or attend a Zoom call is an entirely different issue. Blistering fast speeds are great, but reliablity is paramount for some.
Additionally, Starlink lacks a dedicated support line. When issues arise or when you need assistance configuring crucial on-site equipment like your CCTV, you're limited to Starlink's ticketing system. This leaves you largely at their mercy. From what I've heard, responses typically come a few days later and often lack a personal touch.
REGIONAL ISP'S
Option 3 - Regional ISP'S
So this one is the hardest one cover off in a few paragraphs. The UK is littered with Regional ISP's running their own Fibre networks with varied degrees of success. Can I vouch for any individually, unfortunately not, but I can give you a bit of a background into what to look out for.
So, when would I recommend a small ISP to our enquirers?
When an enquiry asks about a regional ISP, it's very difficult for us say whether they will give a good quality of service. To find one local to you, the easiest way would be to simply google alternative ISP with your locations.
Some may have a fibre presence close-by, and some use radio links to move these connections around challenging landscapes assuming line of site is achievable.
When deciding whether to take the plunge with a regional ISP, it's important to read the most recent reviews, reason being we have had many enquiries that have been happy with a provider, only to experience
"Make sure you read the most recent reviews, as some have ended up in financial difficulty recently"
So, when would I recommend a regional ISP to our enquiries?
Feedback from enquiries who have used Starlink is varied. Much of it depends on how crucial the internet is for you. As a casual consumer, if Netflix goes down for a few hours, it might be mildly irritating, but it's far from a disaster. However, if you're working from home or running a business, not being able to access your accounting software, upload vital CAD files, or attend a Zoom call is an entirely different issue. INTEGRA SD-WAN
Option 4 - Integra SD-WAN
So, where does our product fit into the connectivity mix, and is it right for you? Well first off, if you are looking for a cheap option, then this won't be the right fit for you. I think it's fair to say, at £110 + vat per month, we are more expensive than typical consumer products, a little more expensive than satelitte internet, but cost much less than a leased line.
So, when would I recommend our solution to our enquirers?
At the end of the day, it's always the customers decision, no-one is forcing anyone to take a service and everyones perception of how important internet is to them comes down to their individual circumstances.
If you are working from home and need a reliable internet connection that is fast, then we are a great fit. Some people will pay a little more for piece-of-mind knowing that their connnection is resilliant (we use multiple connections simulateously), this ensures that the service always stays online and having someone at the end of the phone that can help troubleshoot if something was to happen or maybe they need assistance with a bit of configiuration onsite some people value.
It's very much a business grade service, and thats why it costs a bit more.
The speeds you receive will come down to a number of factors and this is why we always do a desktop survey to really drill down into what sort of service you can expect to receive.
With the changes to the way people work nowadays and people are able to work in a rural location, it might cost more but its certainly alot less than having to go back to the office everyday, as you cant work effectively from home.
Where does it fall short, though?
As with all the services so far, there are limitations. Price of installation is high. Most installations including an internal WiFi network for the home come in around £1900 + Vat. Along with the monthly cost, it is certainly at the higher end.
Secondly, even though the mobile networks have 99% UK coverage, that doesn't mean that their service is amazing across 99% of the country. However during our desktop survey 'we need a few more details for that' we can establish very accurately what sort of service you could achieve at your property.

Step 1. Verifying Your Fibre Availability
Your next step should be a preliminary check for mobile connectivity. Though this isn't completely accurate, it does allow you to gauge whether a more cost-effective solution like a mobile WiFi hub from one of the mobile network operators is an option - EE, Three, Vodafone or o2.
